Jay Barney, PhD

“Church disaffiliation is a challenge that cannot be dismissed by labeling it as a “sifting”—and then ignored. After all, those leaving the Church are God’s children and are we not commanded to love all His sons and daughters, even if they have chosen to leave the Church? Thus, the question isn’t “should we love” these people, but rather, what is the best way to express that love?”

Jay Barney is a Presidential Professor of Strategic Management and the Pierre Lassonde Chair of Social Entrepreneurship at the University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business. He previously held the Chase Chair for Excellence in Corporate Strategy at Ohio State University. A leading scholar in resource-based theory, his research on firm capabilities and sustained competitive advantage is among the most cited in strategy and entrepreneurship. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Management and the Strategic Management Society and earned his PhD from Yale University.

Marc Dotson, PhD

“Christ has called us to gather everyone to Him. This research is an honest look at where we’re falling short and should inspire us to do better to love and serve as He would.”

Marc Dotson is an Assistant Professor of Data Analytics and Information Systems at Utah State University’s Jon M. Huntsman School of Business and a Project Mentor in the Analytics Solutions Center. He previously served on the faculty at Brigham Young University. His research sits at the intersection of data analytics and marketing, with a focus on causal inference, Bayesian methods, machine learning, and choice modeling. A dedicated teacher and mentor, he specializes in making complex analytical concepts accessible. He earned his PhD in Quantitative Marketing from Ohio State University.

Shawn Edwards

“Information is power, and the insight revealed by this ground-breaking work can empower us to do what it clearly shows we need to do more of–to meet each other right where we are–just as Christ did, and does, every day.”

Shawn Edwards is the founder and CEO of mindsight, a consumer and brand research firm based in Denver, Colorado. He brings nearly 25 years of research industry experience, including tenures with Microsoft, The Clorox Company, The Kraft Heinz Company, and Danone. His work focuses on helping brands understand their consumers and scaling with integrity. He holds a BS in Communications from University of Utah and an MBA in International Business from Thunderbird School of Global Management.

Ryan Gottfredson, PhD, Organizational Psychologist

“This research sheds light on the reality that pain and hurt are part of many people’s experience within the church. In doing so, it puts the church community in a better position to respond in ways that foster greater health and healing.”

Ryan is a researcher and Wall Street Journal best-selling author whose expertise centers on organizational dynamics, leadership effectiveness, and the psychological patterns that shape how individuals and groups operate. He received his Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from Indiana University and has published more than 20 scholarly articles in prominent academic journals, with his work cited over 8,000 times.

James Glenn

“LDS membership activity trends indicate that we have reached a critical inflection point in engagement. We must build a community rooted in honesty, compassion, and transparency. The rising generation of the Church demands this evolution, and this research provides a rigorous foundation for that journey.”

James Glenn is a senior research professional and cultural historian specializing in Latter-day Saint history.  He recently retired after more than three decades with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he worked as a research manager in the Correlation Department, conducting global research. He is currently a PhD student in U.S. history at the University of Utah, with an emphasis on 20th-Century Mormon history, race, gender, and the family.  He holds master’s degrees from Brigham Young University in international and area studies and from the University of Utah in U.S. social history. He brings deep expertise in applied research and historical analysis.

Sam Hardy, PhD

“Strong and Dotson’s rigorous, mixed-methods study draws on an exceptionally large and diverse sample of Latter-day Saints. Although not based on a random sample, its findings align with other research I’ve seen and offer thoughtful, credible, and actionable insights that can help Church leaders and members better understand and strengthen Latter-day Saint culture.”

Sam is a professor in the Department of Psychology at Brigham Young University. He has a PhD in developmental psychology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He is one of the leading researchers on religious development in adolescence and young adulthood. His current focus is on religious deconversion and reconversion.

Jeff Larson, PhD
